Who We Are

A community devoted to Jesus, love, and building a Kingdom-centered future.

A Journey Rooted in the Presence of God and His Power

F
ounded in 1999, Pastor Gene & Karen Wolfenbarger answered a divine calling to build a community centered on God’s presence, prayer, and power. From humble beginnings in community spaces to becoming a thriving family in Knoxville, The Gathering Church has been a testament to God’s grace and purpose. Through every season, our focus remains clear: to love, serve, and grow together as a family under Christ.

What Drives Us

Our Mission is Clear and Powerful

At The Gathering Church, our mission is to create a welcoming space where people encounter the love of God, experience transformational faith, and grow in purpose through prayer, worship, and community. We believe that every individual is called to make a difference, and our mission is to help guide you toward fulfilling God’s purpose for your life.

Our Beliefs and Values

Our beliefs are rooted in God’s Word and centered on Jesus Christ.
We believe in the presence and power of the Holy Spirit, the authority of Scripture, and the mission of the Church to make disciples.

The Authority of Scripture

The Bible is the inspired and infallible Word of God.

The Presence of God

Worship and prayer are essential to our faith.

Spiritual Growth

We are called to grow together in faith and love.

Generosity & Service

We are called to give, serve, and love one another.

Guided by Godly Leadership

The Gathering Church is an Elder/Staff-led church. We believe the Scripture provides the best example for the governance of the New Testament Church

The elders who are among you I exhort, I who am a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that will be revealed: 2 Shepherd the flock of God which is among you, serving as overseers, not by compulsion but willingly, not for dishonest gain but eagerly; 3 nor as being lords over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock; 4 and when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that does not fade away..

From Miletus he sent to Ephesus and called for the elders of the church….28 Therefore take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood. 29 For I know this, that after my departure savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock. 30 Also from among yourselves men will rise up, speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after themselves. 31 Therefore watch, and remember that for three years I did not cease to warn every one, night and day with tears.

For this reason, I left you in Crete, that you should set in order the things that are lacking, and appoint elders in every city as I commanded you—6 if a man is blameless, the husband of one wife, having faithful children not accused of dissipation or insubordination. 7 For a bishop must be blameless, as a steward of God, not self-willed, not quick-tempered, not given to wine, not violent, not greedy for money, 8 but hospitable, a lover of what is good, sober-minded, just, holy, self-controlled, 9 holding fast the faithful word as he has been taught, that he may be able, by sound doctrine, both to exhort and convict those who contradict.

The elders at The Gathering Church are appointed, through the prompting of Holy Spirit, by the lead pastor/elder much as they were by the apostles, Paul and Peter.

Our deacons are selected by the by the elders to serve the local church.  By appointing deacons, the elders are better able to focus on their mandate of leading the church and teaching the Word.
