Why the Secret Place?

But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly. Matthew 6:6

God loves it when we pray. In Matthew 6, we find the words of Jesus as He teaches on many topics - finances, anxiety, and prayer. It is clear all throughout scripture that God desires, even needs, our prayers. Heaven is loosed in response to those praying in the earth. Prayer is a necessity for the people of God to see God’s Kingdom come to the earth. We see God’s people constantly joining in prayer all the way throughout scripture. There is great power in our corporate prayer, but the principle Jesus is teaching in Matthew 6 is clear. There is an order in which He desires us to pray - in secret first, then in public. Our personal prayer lives come before our corporate prayer lives.

God sent Jesus into the earth to die and restore relationship between God and man. He has, and always will, want relationship as the foundation of all things in His Kingdom. Our personal prayer lives are our relationship with Jesus, The Father, and Holy Spirit. When we have no prayer life, we have no relationship. It’s the same in the natural. If we never speak with our children, spouse, or parents then truly, we have no relationship. Our personal prayer life is the determining factor in our lives being victorious. This statement may seem overdramatic, but it is truth. Jesus’ life proved it. He made it His habit to go away to pray, so much that His habit provoked the disciples to ask Him, “teach us to pray”. The disciples saw the correlation of Jesus’ victorious life and His private prayer life. The question is, ‘Can the same correlation be drawn from our lives?’.

Do you have a personal prayer life? Where is the secret place you meet the God of the universe and fellowship with the Trinity? If you have not made your time alone with God the greatest priority in your life, now is the time. We need victory in our lives and those around us need to be provoked by our victorious lives. The rewards of the secret place cannot be matched by any other practice in our lives; they are supernatural. Determine in your heart to seek the Lord today and every day!
